The Best of Alexandria Farmers Markets

Farmer’s markets are more than just a place to shop for fruits and vegetables. They have become quite the culinary community experience. Of course, you’ll find local farmers with fresh produce, meats and dairy, but now there’s a variety of other vendors who attend each week. It’s not uncommon to see food trucks, cooking demos, live music, freshly made bread, local honey, desserts, jewelry, soaps, art work and more! Here is our favorite Alexandria Farmers Markets! Old Town Farmers Market – This is one of the oldest farmers markets in the country, having been in operation more than 265 years. Even George Washington is said to have sold his Mt Vernon produce here at the Market Square. During the peak season, there are more than 70 vendors offering fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry, cheeses, breads, pastries, fresh pasta, pickled vegetables, cut flowers, potted plants, soaps, jewelry and art. A great perk is the free parking in the underground Market Square garage during market hours. This market also accepts SNAP/Food Stamps. For more information, visit here.

Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisan Market
A market for the Trail lovers. This volunteer-operated market is location near the entrance to Four Mile Run Trail. The market is part of the expansion and improvement of the Four Mile Run Park with a heavy artisan component. The Four Mile Management team works closely with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Activities to provide local artisans and producers of goods an opportunity to sell their products. After Thanksgiving it becomes the “Winter Market” held indoors at the Four Mile Run Park Conservatory Center (4109 Mt. Vernon Avenue) Sundays, 9am-1pm, year round. For more information, visit here.

Del Ray
The Del Ray Farmers market celebrates its 25th birthday this year! This year-round market has vendors that change seasonally. But no matter the month, you’ll always find a variety of fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheeses, breads, fresh pasta, baked goods and cut flowers. Del Ray also welcomes nonprofit, school, and civic groups to hold bake sales, and other fundraising events. The website is here for more information.

McCutchen Mount Vernon FRESHFARM
Venture into Fairfax county to this local market with a gardening focus. Many of the vendors offer small plants at the beginning of the season, while others provide larger landscaping plants bigger projects. A
Master Gardener Plant Clinic is usually on site to answer questions about plants in your landscape. This market offers a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and cut flowers. You can also find fresh eggs, baked goods, honey, cider, dairy products and a butcher. More details here.
