Backyard Pool Maintenance Tips – The Three Most Important Things You Need to Do this Summer

Summer has officially arrived! There’s nothing better, or more refreshing, than the convenience of having your own backyard pool during the dog days of summer. Unfortunately, convenience comes with cost. Pool maintenance isn’t cheap by any means. Doing these three things will allow you to enjoy a crisp clean pool all summer long, as well as help avoid pricey maintenance and repair costs.

  1. Get the gunk out. Be sure to skim the pool’s surface daily and grab debris before it hits the bottom and becomes much harder to pick up. Once a week, scrub the sides of the pool to prevent algae buildup. It’s also a good idea to schedule a time to vacuum once a week – preferably when the pool is less likely to be in use.  Keeping your water clean will reduce the amount of chemicals you need to add.
  1. Watch the water level.  Over time the heat will evaporate the water in your pool. Low levels reduce the skimmers ability to adequately filter the water.  If you need to add more water, just use a garden hose. And, don’t forget to rebalance the chemicals each time.
  1. Check the filters. If your filter pressure is low, or if the filter is clogged, it can’t do its job and you end up with dirty water. Every few weeks, check the filter’s pressure gauge – usually on top of the filter itself. The ideal pressure for your unit can be found in the owner’s manual. Also, check the pool filter and use a hose to spray it down. If it requires a heavier clean, soak it in a filter cleaner (refer to your owner’s manual on proper cleaning solutions and instructions). Clean water will be on the way.

Finally, always maintain a safe swimming environment and avoid serious accidents. Pools are meant to be enjoyed. Have fun and happy swimming!
