Prep Your Home for Winter in 5 Easy Steps

Prep Your Home for Winter

In 5 Easy Steps

Winter is coming! Now is a great time to take advantage of the mild weather and prepare your home before the first snow storm hits. Your home is one of your most valuable investments. By keeping it well maintained it will hold its value over time and can help you avoid pricey emergency repairs.

  1. Gutters & Roof. What was once beautiful fall foliage has most likely made its way into your gutters. Clear them and use a hose to test that flowing water runs easily and away from your home’s foundation. While you’re up there, take a look at your roof.  Any loose shingles or damage should be repaired before the weight of snow and ice wreak more havoc and create costly expenses.
  2. Fireplace. There’s nothing quite like a crackling fire on a cold winter day. However, fireplaces are the number one cause of residential fires. To avoid any hazards, its best to clear out built up ash, clean the doors, check the chimney for cracks and inspect that the chimney caps are secure and clear of debris.
  3. HVAC. Take the time to replace the filter and then go ahead and schedule a maintenance check up with a professional heating and cooling company. They will ensure your system is in top shape and ready to keep you toasty.
  4. Doors & Windows. Check for leaks and drafts. By caulking and insulating now, you will avoid increased energy use and utility bills…it’s also good for the environment.
  5. Patio. First, give everything a good clean…tables, furniture and the grill (don’t forget to turn off the gas/propane). Then, remove pillows and cushions and store them in a dry place like a shed or large exterior storage tote. Complete the job by covering your remaining items with protective and water proof covers that can be secured to keep from blowing away during storms.  Finally, don’t forget to bring in any potted plants that may not be able to tolerate the colder temperatures.

Now, your home is ready to take on the snow, ice and anything else Mother Nature brings your way!
