Spring in the DC area is all about the Cherry Blossoms. These iconic blooms transform the Tidal Basin and surrounding areas into a sea of soft pink and white petals, drawing visitors from around the world.

Peak Bloom Dates for 2025: According to the National Park Service, peak bloom for the 2025 Cherry Blossoms was expected between March 28 and April 1. “Peak bloom” is defined as the day when 70% of the Yoshino cherry trees are blooming. Weather can shift the timing, but early April remains a great window to plan your visit.
A Brief History of the Cherry Blossoms: The cherry trees were a gift from Japan in 1912 as a symbol of friendship between the United States and Japan. The original shipment included over 3,000 trees, which were planted primarily around the Tidal Basin. First Lady Helen Taft and Viscountess Chinda, wife of the Japanese ambassador, planted the first two trees in a small ceremony that still echoes through today’s National Cherry Blossom Festival.
